“Ukrainian Universities Discuss Sustainable Development Strategy at the 4th International Scientific Symposium on «Sustainable Development: Status and Prospects»

On February 14, 2024, within the framework of the 4th International Scientific Symposium “Sustainable Development: Status and Prospects”, a round table was held on the theme “Sustainable Development Strategy in Ukrainian Universities: History and Challenges”. Representatives from leading Ukrainian universities and partner universities of the project participated, including the National Transport University, Zhytomyr Polytechnic State University, Odesa State Environmental University, National Forestry University of Ukraine, Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding, Priazovsky State Technical University, National University “Lviv Polytechnic”, Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas, Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University, Uzhhorod National University, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies, National Aviation University, Ukrainian Academy of Printing, Donetsk National Technical University, among others.

Inesa Rutkovska, PhD in Technical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Transport Academy of Ukraine, and distinguished educator of Ukraine, presented the Erasmus+ KA220-HED project “Transformative Learning Network for Sustainable and Resilient (Post-War) Ukraine”. Round table participants had the opportunity to view the presentation “Preconditions for Implementing Sustainable Development Strategy Elements at the National Transport University” and discuss achievements, prospects, and ways to implement sustainable development elements in Ukrainian universities.

As a result of the round table’s work, the participants formulated the following proposals and conclusions:

  1. Conduct monitoring of educational programs, research themes, and management decisions in partner universities for compliance with sustainable development goals.
  2. Organize a seminar for guarantors of educational programs and heads of research themes to enhance their awareness and competencies regarding the implementation of sustainable development.
  3. Monitor the requirements of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings and QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024 to develop a concept for Guidelines on Sustainable Development Management Strategy in Ukrainian universities.

Concluding the discussion at the round table, representatives of Ukrainian universities emphasized the importance of integrating sustainable development principles into educational programs and research. Participants expressed hope for further cooperation and experience sharing in the field of sustainable development.
